What does the project include?

Stage one works of the Surf Coast Cultural Centre, to be in Torquay’s Surf City precinct, will include:

A new library, triple the existing size, providing space for user groups and expanding our collections and programs
A new Australian National Surfing Museum and home for Surfing Victoria
Upgrading of the Multi Arts Centre, including arts makers’ spaces, rehearsal spaces, for one of Australia’s most creative communities.
Recognition and celebration of Aboriginal heritage, art and surf culture
A new Visitor Information Centre

The centre will support 800 total long-term jobs for the Great Ocean Road region, helping our communities recover from the pandemic.

Stage one is expected to be delivered in 2024, but we need funding to make it happen. Council is contributing $8 million and the site for the centre, and we need to secure $29 million in grants and pledges from state andfederal governments and private organisations.

The Surf Coast Shire Council has recently approved the design concept for a state-of-the-art Cultural Centre, as well as committing a site and $8 million dollars in funding. This is an amazing start, but the centre will need an additional $29 million dollars in state and federal funding in order to begin construction.

The Surf Coast Cultural Centre would deliver extraordinary benefits for our community: revitalising the tourism industry after the pandemic, supporting community initiatives, and providing a creative hub for the region.

It will create a new home for the Torquay Library and Australian National Surfing Museum and Surfing Victoria, as well as creating space for visual arts, performances and rehearsals, and community programs.

The business case projects that the Surf Coast Cultural Centre will bring $243 million in direct and indirect tourism expenditure, just during its first phase. Additionally, it will help create more than 800 new jobs throughout the Great Ocean Road region.

After such a challenging few years, our tourism and hospitality industries are in desperate need of revitalisation, and the Surf Coast Cultural Centre is the perfect place to start. It will celebrate our community’s proud surfing history and support our burgeoning creative scene.

I sincerely hope you will consider what federal funding opportunities may be available to help make the Surf Coast Cultural Centre a reality, and take an active role in advocating for the project.
